Task:  write a six-word story at the Mariposa Storytelling Festival, 2014   photo:  Joe Goger
Every year I attend the Mariposa Storytelling Festival and try and get friends to attend.  Folks think it is all about children's stories, but it is for adults.  When you listen intently, your imagination kicks in, you make up the pictures yourself, and it becomes a rich and wonderful experience.  Us "diehards" love it but there are always empty seats.  I cry, laugh, and most importantly, think about ideas presented by these talented and captivating International storytellers.  There is a whole community of storytellers who travel to tell.  And most of them are outstanding.  Our little town has had a great festival every year under the guidance of Marilyn Rudzik.  She chooses the tellers, goes to the National Storytelling Festival to hear new folks, and invites the very best tellers.  I hosted a "home concert" for Dovie Thomason this year and it was such a rewarding experience in a home setting.     About the photo:  I'm better at pictures than words. . . . .
Painting for another show for A Sense of Place Gallery in Fresno, so am focussed on this upcoming deadline.  Spring is way too early to California -- it is about a month and a half early I'm afraid.  The drought is real here and the fire season has already started in the county.  Thanks for stopping by!  Off to the studio.  Penny

Penny, I just had a crazy idea. I wonder if it would be interesting to have an even where artists tell stories?

On one hand, we "tell stories" through our visual work itself. On the other hand, I have met very, very few visual artist who, at least once they get going, are not also quite interesting talkers and tellers of stories.

I think I'm imagining each artist simply starting with a work and riffing on whatever stories lie behind it - prior experiences with the subject, stories about being in that place, tales of people we connect with the thing...

Hmmm...

Hi Dan,
Sounds like fun .. . . but too busy this summer and fall; how about winter?
